“There is a belief that all four wheels should be safer than two,” said Cassandra Villegas, of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore said in a statement.

“But we found otherwise. The people involved in ATV accidents are more likely to die or suffer serious injuries.”

Villegas and Dr. Adil Haider studied 60,000 patients injured in accidents, ATV or bike trail between 2002 and 2006 for his study, presented at a meeting in Washington of the American College of Surgeons.

ATV riders were 55 percent more likely to end up in intensive care unit, they said.

ATVs can be larger and heavier than bicycles, and can crush the victims. Haider said Villegas and helmets may be another factor – 60 percent of motorcyclists wore helmets, compared with 30 percent of people injured in ATV accidents.
